Sustaining physical activity during Transition into Emerging Adulthood: examining motivational and real-time factors impacting DailY-assessed behaviours

The purpose of Project STEADY is to learn about the potential changes in physical activity and other health behaviours during the transition out of high school. We are interested in how physical activity patterns changes and how motivations for physical activity may shift during this time, as well as how it impacts overall wellness.

This study involves a 4-week initial trial phase and, for qualifying participants, a 24-month formal cohort study beginning in September 2026.

  • The Principal Investigator for Project STEADY is Dr. Matthew Kwan, Co-Director of the INCH Lab, and Associate Professor in the Department of Child & Youth Studies at Brock University.

  • Initial Trial Phase

During the initial trial you will be asked to complete 3 questionnaires and 8 days (4 at a time) of multiple daily mini questionnaires (5 per day).

    Formal Cohort Study

If you complete 50% or more of the initial trial components you will be invited to participate in the formal cohort study.

Before the study begins you will receive a smartwatch and you will join an online group on-boarding session. During the study you will be asked to: wear the smartwatch for 24 months (during sleep and wake hours), and download a smartphone app (at no cost to you) in order for our team to review the information from the smartwatch, complete seasonal questionnaires (5 per year, for 2 years) that will take approximately 30 minutes, and complete daily mini-questionnaires (5 questionnaires per day) during each season (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) for a period of four days (these mini questionnaires will take approximately 1-2 minutes to complete).

  • If you would like to participate you can complete the Project STEADY Eligibility Questionnaire and if you are eligible you will be able to participate in the Initial Trial.

Participants who complete 50% or more of the components of the Initial Trial will be invited to participate in the 24-month cohort study.

  • Participating in this study is important because it may help us to better understand the changes in physical activity that occur during the transition after high school and how we can help individuals stay physically active and maintain well-being.

This information may directly helpeducation and health systems identify methods and strategies to help people maintain a healthy active lifestyle as they make their first major life transition.

  • Initial Trial Compensation

    • For the initial trial phase participants will receive a $10 gift card and if they complete 50% or more of the components they will receive an additional $50.

    Formal Cohort Study Compensation

    • For the formal cohort study participants will receive $50 for completing the group onboarding session, $20 for each completed seasonal questionnaire, and $30 for each completed mini-questionnaire cycle.

    • Participants who complete 70% or more of the study components will also receive yearly bonuses– $50 after the first year and $100 after the second year.

    • The total possible renumeration for participating in the formal cohort study is $640.

    • Participants who complete the study will also keep their smartwatch.
